Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that sports is not merely confined to competition; rather, it consolidates the spirit of camaraderie, harmony, mutual respect, and patriotism among people. The role of sports is immense in building a healthy, conscious, active, and self-confident nation.
He made these remarks in a message delivered on Wednesday (October 21) on the occasion of the ‘Coco 18th National Summer Athletics Competition-2026’. The competition, scheduled for October 23-25, will be held in honor of the late sports organizer Arafat Rahman Koko of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation.
On the occasion of the competition, the Prime Minister extended his sincere greetings and congratulations to all organizers, participating athletes, coaches, officials, judges, sports organizers, and relevant personnel. He also wished for the overall success of the competition.
The Prime Minister stated that this is not merely a sporting event, but a crucial endeavor to elevate the nation’s sports sector to a respectable position on the international stage.
He expressed hope that this event would facilitate the development of new talents, foster interest in sports among the youth, and further consolidate the foundation of athletics at the national level.
The Prime Minister added that sports is now recognized not merely as a means of entertainment or physical well-being, but also as a profession. To establish sports as a profession in Bangladesh, the current government has incorporated sports education into the curriculum from the school level. Sports is one of the primary means for developing physical capability, mental fortitude, discipline, self-confidence, and leadership qualities.
He urged all participating athletes to adhere to rules and regulations, showcasing their best performance with utmost dedication and sportsmanship. Concurrently, he requested the organizers and concerned officials to uphold transparency, impartiality, and professionalism.
