Tura, Oct 12: A cancer survivor’s personal account and an oncologist’s advice on recognising warning signs were the highlights of a breast cancer awareness programme held at North-Eastern Hill University’s (NEHU) Tura campus on Monday.
Organised by The Big C Cancer Support Network as part of Pink October, the programme brought together students, faculty members and medical professionals to discuss breast cancer, early detection and the need for timely medical consultation.
Dr Silchang K. Marak, an oncologist at Tura Civil Hospital, spoke about the importance of being aware of changes in one’s body and seeking medical advice when warning signs appear. He urged participants not to ignore unusual changes and stressed the need for appropriate medical consultation.
Natasha R. Marak, founder and coordinator of The Big C Cancer Support Network, shared her experience of living through cancer, highlighting the role of timely care and emotional support during treatment and recovery.
Drawing on her own journey, she encouraged people to show greater understanding towards cancer patients and their families, who often need support beyond medical treatment.
The network works with cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and families, offering psychosocial support and a platform to share experiences and access information.
The programme was held with the support of Dr J. U. Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU’s Tura campus.
Participants took a Pink October pledge to spread awareness about breast cancer and support those affected by the disease. Pink ribbons were also distributed as a symbol of solidarity.
Moreno Gretachi R. Marak proposed the vote of thanks, acknowledging the university, the resource person and participants for their involvement.
The programme carried the message, “Know. Detect. Act.”
