KUALA LUMPUR: A clinic manager was left stunned when his online banking account appeared to show a balance of RM1 billion, despite having less than RM1,000 in it moments earlier.
The unusual incident went viral after Wan Muhammad Fairus, 33, shared a screenshot showing the 10-digit figure on his banking app, along with his account of the experience.
The father of four, who lives in Kuching, Sarawak said he was in his bedroom preparing to make a transaction when he noticed the unusually large balance.
"At the time, I was in my bedroom about to make a transaction. If I remember correctly, my account balance was below RM1,000. When I opened the app and tapped the icon to hide the balance, I was shocked to see such a huge amount.
"I was really shocked! My hands were shaking as I held my phone. I tried logging out and logging in again, but the money was still there.
"Only after checking my bank statement and asking ChatGPT what the figure meant did I realise it amounted to RM1 billion," he said when contacted.
Realising that the money was not his, Wan Muhammad Fairus suspected a technical error and immediately contacted the bank for clarification.
He said he had no intention of using the money, knowing it did not belong to him and fearing possible legal consequences.
"After I contacted the bank, they informed me that there had been a technical issue and temporarily blocked my account until 4pm yesterday.
"Everything was resolved after the bank reversed the transaction, and the original amount in my account was unaffected.
"The bank did mention that it wanted to give me a reward, but I have not received anything yet and do not know what it will be. Perhaps I have to wait for an email or an announcement from them," he said.
