Holiday lights look great. Switching them on and off every day does not. When the outlet is tucked behind a bush or around the side of the house, it becomes a nightly chore in the cold. An outdoor smart plug can automate the routine, and the TP-Link Tapo P400M is worth considering when its price drops. It works with the decorations you already own, so you don't have to replace anything.
How a Smart Plug Makes Holiday Lighting Easier
A smart plug sits between the wall outlet and your decoration. It connects to your home Wi-Fi, letting you control it through your phone, with voice commands or on a schedule. Think of it as a light switch you can flip from the couch, or one that flips itself every evening at 5:30.
What Price Makes the Tapo P400M Worth Buying?
There is no live deal right now. On September 20, 2026, Amazon listed the P400M at USD 19.97, about 23% below its USD 25.99 list price and 16% below its USD 23.86 average over the previous 90 days. That offer has ended, and the same tracker showed USD 25.99 on October 15. Check the current listing before you buy.
The USD 19.97 price has come up more than once this fall. A deal listing from September 7 shows it too. The price also dipped as low as USD 15.99 in that 90-day window. So around USD 20 is a reasonable target to watch for, and USD 16 would be a stronger deal.
This is the US model, built for US outlets. Best Buy sells the same plug under the name TP25, so search both names when you compare stores.
Two Outlets, Two Schedules, More Control
The P400M has two outlets, and you can control each one separately. This is its most useful feature for a yard display.
Put your roofline lights on one outlet and an inflatable snowman on the other. The snowman may only need to run from dusk until 10 p.m., while the roofline lights stay on a little longer. Each gets its own schedule.
If everything you own switches on and off together, you may not need two outlets. A single-outlet plug such as the Kasa KP401, listed at USD 13.99 in an October 2025 roundup, can do the job for less.
Weather Protection Comes With Limits
TP-Link rates the plug IP65, which covers dust and strong jets of water. It does not mean the plug can sit in a puddle or be dunked. One deal site lists the rating as IP64, so confirm the figure on the listing you buy from.
The datasheet says to install the plug face down and keep the weatherproof cover on any outlet you aren't using. A good outdoor plug still needs good installation.
Smart Home Compatibility and Wi-Fi Range Explained
The P400M supports Matter, a common standard that lets smart devices work across brands. That means it can work with Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home, as well as TP-Link's own Tapo app. Setup through Matter needs a compatible controller and app, and some features may differ by platform.
The plug uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so check that your router supports it. TP-Link says the signal reaches up to 300 feet in an open field and 164 feet through three concrete walls in its testing. Real homes vary, so test the signal at your outdoor outlet before you hang everything.
The Outdoor Safety Checks You Shouldn't Skip
A smart plug is convenient, but it doesn't make an unsafe setup safe.
The plug is rated for 1,800 watts in total across both outlets. Add up what you plan to connect and stay under that number.
Check your lights and cords for damage before hanging them.
Use only outdoor-rated extension cords outside, and don't overload outlets.
Consumer Reports advises unplugging holiday lights when you leave home or go to bed. A schedule is convenient, but it doesn't replace that advice, so decide what you're comfortable leaving on unattended.

Is the Tapo P400M the Right Choice for Your Yard?
Buy the two-outlet P400M if you have two groups of decorations that need different schedules, or you want room to add more next year. A Tom's Guide editor who has used it for more than five years says it has held up for his Halloween and Christmas displays. If you only have one set of lights, a cheaper single-outlet outdoor plug is enough.
One limit to know: this is a plain on/off plug. It doesn't measure how much power your lights use, so it can't show what your display costs to run.

Final Thoughts
The P400M makes the most sense for households that want to control two sets of outdoor decorations on separate schedules. Its weather protection and remote controls add convenience, but they don't justify paying any price.
The September 20 offer has ended, so check the current listing before buying. Around USD 20 is a reasonable target based on recent prices, and USD 16 would be a better deal. If you only need one set of lights, a cheaper single-outlet model may be all you need.

Waterproof Camera vs Smartphone: Which is Better for Your Next Holiday?
1. What does the Tapo P400M do?
It is an outdoor smart plug that sits between your outlet and your decorations. You can switch them on or off from your phone, with your voice, or on a schedule.
2. Why would I want two outlets?
Each outlet is controlled separately, so two sets of decorations can run on different schedules. For example, roofline lights can stay on later than an inflatable. If everything runs together, a cheaper single-outlet plug will do.
3. Is there a deal on it right now?
Not as of October 15, 2026. The USD 19.97 offer from September 20 has ended, and the price was back at USD 25.99 on that date. Around USD 20 is a reasonable target to watch for, and USD 16 would be better. Check the live listing before you buy.
4. Can it stay outside in the rain?
It is rated IP65, which covers dust and strong jets of water, but it can't sit in a puddle or be dunked. Install it face down and keep the cover on unused outlets, as TP-Link directs.
5. How much can I plug into it?
The limit is 1,800 watts in total across both outlets. Add up what you plan to connect and stay under that number. Also use outdoor-rated extension cords and check cords for damage before hanging lights.
