The No. 2 Michigan State hockey team dropped its first contest of the season on Oct. 23, falling 1-0 on the road against New Hampshire in the first if a two-game series with the Wildcats.
Both sides skated to a 0-0 tie through two periods before New Hampshire broke through with a power play goal from Emile Guite with 11 minutes remaining in the third period.
"We didn’t do enough to win a hockey game tonight, and to me, there’s a difference between being expected to win and being entitled to win, and we’re definitely not entitled to win any hockey games," MSU coach Adam Nightingale said. "We’ve got to go out and earn it, and I refuse to say to our guys that we're just young, because when you start to go down that path you give the guys an excuse. Our guys are good enough and smart enough, and (New Hampshire) is a good team and we'll have to be better if we want to have success tomorrow."
The Spartans were outshot 34-14 and had 12 shots blocked by Wildcat defenders in the contest. Freshman goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen made 33 saves to set a new career high, and MSU was unable to convert on its lone chance with the man advantage.
MSU (3-1-0) will face New Hampshire again on Oct. 24 with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
