Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen found the scoresheet against his former club as Galatasaray came from behind to secure a resounding 4–2 victory over Lille in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday at the Decathlon Arena–Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The Man of the Match display was capped by Osimhen’s first Champions League goal since February, helping the Turkish giants bounce back impressively from their 4–1 defeat to Barcelona the previous week.
Galatasaray were seeking to recover from a 4-1 home defeat to Barcelona last week and made a flying start when Yunus Akgün fired the visitors ahead in two minutes of play.
Lille responded quickly when Soriba Diaoune equalised in the seventh minute. The youngster showed composure to collect a through ball from Alexsandro, round Galatasaray goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır and slot into an empty net.
The Turkish champions were awarded a penalty midway through the first half after Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer appeared to bring down Osimhen. However, a video assistant referee review overturned the decision after the goalkeeper was judged to have won the ball.
Diaoune struck again in the 39th minute, reacting quickest after a save to put Lille back in front and give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
Galatasaray restored parity just before half-time when Aleksey Batrakov headed home unmarked from Roland Sallai’s cross, punishing Lille’s slack marking.
The visitors continued to press after the break, with Osimhen eventually making the difference in the 61st minute to put Galatasaray in front and complete the turnaround.
Galatasaray will aim to build on their first Champions League win of the campaign when they host Stuttgart on Tuesday, November 3.
Lille have now lost both of their home matches in the league phase after taking the lead. They will travel to Norway to face Bodø/Glimt later that evening in search of their first points in the competition.
