Though all the buzz in the streaming world seems to be surrounding the rumored new Apple TV 4K announcement tomorrow, it looks like Google may have begun work on a successor to its own streaming device. According to Cord Cutter News, a new version of the Google TV Streamer is in development, and is "expected to keep the existing unit’s overall pill-shaped form factor while reducing its width for a more compact footprint that takes up less space near a television."
In addition, 9to5Google reports that the new Google TV Streamer will include a faster processor, more storage and a microphone directly on the streaming device so that spoken commands prompted by “Hey Google,” can enable hands-free control. The new device will also reportedly have a redesigned remote with more dedicated buttons for popular streaming services (the current model only has buttons for Netflix and YouTube).
While there is no official statement from Google about the existence of a new model, some recent activity on Amazon might suggest that this rumored new Google TV Streamer is not only real, but is coming sooner rather than later.

The current generation of the Google TV Streamer is now out of stock on Amazon
It is still available on several other websites
Eagle-eyed Amazon shoppers may have noticed that over the weekend the basic white Google TV Streamer has suddenly gone out of stock on the website. Though it remains available at Walmart, Best Buy and Google's own website, the device being unavailable at Amazon may be a signal that stock is no longer being replenished at the retail giant, which some have taken to mean that a new device could be on the way sooner rather than later.
Though prior speculation seemed to suggest that a new Google TV Streamer model won't hit shelves until 2027, now might be a good time to announce a forthcoming update, especially with the aforementioned Apple TV 4K all but confirmed to be getting its big debut this week. If Google's new model can compete with the Apple TV in terms of features but continue to undercut it on price, it could steal some of Apple's momentum as we head into the holiday season, even if the new model isn't quite ready for primetime yet.
How much might a new Google TV Streamer cost?
More than the current model but it is unknown by how much
With so many tweaks and improvements, it seems likely that a new Google TV streamer will at least be a little bit more expensive than the current model, which currently retails for $150 after last August's $50 price hike. How much of a price increase this new device will get remains to be seen, but a $199 price point seems likely given Google's targeting of the premium device space after leaving the more budget-friendly Chromecast in the dust back in 2024.
Though all we have right now to go on are rumors and speculation about a new Google TV Streamer, the discontinuation of the white model of the device on Amazon is the clearest signal we've had yet that a new device will be coming soon, and I'll definitely be on the lookout for any new developments about this potential update in the future.
