Banks have spent decades charging businesses for the privilege of moving money across borders slowly. A new dataset from Borderless.xyz suggests stablecoins are doing it cheaper and faster.
The stablecoin payments orchestration and liquidity network published its Q2 2026 Benchmark report on July 13. The headline finding: stablecoin-driven cross-border transfers consistently came in under interbank foreign exchange rates across the corridors it monitors.
That matters because interbank rates are usually treated as the floor. It’s the price big banks give each other, not the price a mid-sized importer gets on a Tuesday afternoon.
What the numbers show
Borderless built the benchmark from 2.96 million rate observations. Those covered 260 payment corridors spanning 108 countries.
The core metric is something the firm calls the “Parity Gap.” It measures how stablecoin delivery pricing compares with the interbank rate for the same currency pair.
The median Parity Gap landed at -3.2 basis points. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point, so the gap is small, but the sign is what counts. A negative number means stablecoin delivery was priced below the interbank benchmark, not above it.
Total delivery costs told a similarly steady story. The median cost to deliver a $10,000 transfer held near 27.2 bps, or $27.20, and stayed consistent across the quarter.
Ticket size still matters. Small $500 transfers averaged delivery costs of 46.2 bps, while $1 million tickets averaged 26.2 bps.
Borderless reported that stablecoin transfers settled nearly instantly, compared with conventional international wires that can take considerably longer to land.
The hidden cost of loyalty
The most interesting number in the report may not be the Parity Gap at all. It’s what Borderless calls the “Routing Tax.”
The Routing Tax measures the cost of sticking with a single provider instead of dynamically choosing whichever one offers the best price at the moment of transfer.
Borderless calculated the median Routing Tax at 23.3 bps. That works out to $2,330 for every $1 million moved.
The report also found that pricing leadership shifts often. In 22 of 62 busy corridors, the best-priced provider changed during the period.
Notice the relationship between the two figures. The Routing Tax of 23.3 bps is nearly as large as the entire 27.2 bps median delivery cost for a $10,000 transfer, which suggests provider selection can matter almost as much as the rail itself.
Who Borderless is and what it’s building
Borderless positions itself as an orchestration layer rather than a single payment provider. Its network supports more than 113 countries and more than 72 currencies through over 19 locally licensed providers.
Businesses plug in through a single API. Borderless says it does not take custody of funds, meaning the money moves through licensed partners rather than sitting on the platform’s own books.
It’s also, conveniently, the exact business model the Routing Tax finding supports. A report showing that single-provider routing is expensive comes from a company that sells multi-provider routing, so readers should weigh the framing accordingly.
The Mastercard connection
Borderless has also been building ties with traditional payments giants. In August 2026, it partnered with Mastercard on a pilot program built around Crypto Credential.
Crypto Credential is Mastercard’s framework for adding compliance and risk signals to crypto transactions. The pilot involves participants including Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe.
What this means for stablecoins and cross-border payments
For businesses, the practical lesson is less about stablecoins versus banks and more about how the routing gets done. The Routing Tax implies that two companies using the same rails could pay meaningfully different prices depending on how they shop for liquidity.
The small-ticket pricing gap — with $500 transfers costing 46.2 bps versus 26.2 bps for $1 million — shows retail remittance users still pay a premium.
