Women staged a protest by besieging a Tasmac shop near Manamadurai here on Wednesday, demanding its closure.
A government liquor shop operating in Valanadu village near Manamadurai in Sivaganga district reportedly caused distress to women and students in the area.
Consequently, three months ago, the villagers staged a protest demanding the closure of the shop. At that time, officials assured that the liquor shop would be closed within three months.
Even after the three-month deadline expired, the liquor shop continued to remain open. Frustrated by this, local women staged a protest by besieging the liquor shop and preventing it from opening.
Officials who held talks with them assured that the liquor shop would be closed within five days after the Deepavali festival. Following this, the women participating in the protest dispersed.
