Drones operated by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked a gold mining site in South Kordofan state on Friday, damaging four gold-processing facilities, the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company said on Saturday.
The attack targeted the market at the Bajon mine, causing material damage, the state-owned company said. Preliminary assessments indicated that no deaths or injuries had been reported.
Mohamed Abdelrahim, director general of the company’s environment and safety department, said the attack took place during the Friday holiday, when workers were absent from the targeted facilities.
The company said it was coordinating with the relevant authorities to assess the damage and determine the extent of the losses.
The incident was the second reported attack on the mine in less than a week. The site is a gold-producing centre that employs large numbers of artisanal miners.
Eastern South Kordofan is home to thousands of artisanal gold miners operating in the localities of Qadeer, El Liri and Talodi. The mining areas lie near territory controlled by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, which is allied with the RSF.
