Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte-starrer Akka, a gangster series set in the 1980s, will premiere on Netflix on October 30, the streaming platform announced on Saturday.
Produced by YRF Entertainment, the series is set in Pernuru, a fictional kingdom shaped by generations of women who built, governed and protected it.
The story follows Bhavani, played by Suresh, and Rudra, essayed by Apte, two formidable women whose contrasting perspectives and rivalries shape the kingdom’s power dynamics.
Written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty, Akka marks his debut as a filmmaker. Netflix also unveiled the series’ teaser on Saturday, coinciding with Suresh’s 34th birthday.
Suresh won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of actor Savitri in the 2018 biographical drama Mahanati. Akka marks her first series with Netflix and YRF Entertainment.
“The love I receive from the audience every year makes this day incredibly meaningful, and being able to celebrate it by unveiling the teaser of Akka, a project so close to my heart, feels truly special. Bhavani is one of the most unique and memorable characters I have had the opportunity to play,” she said in a statement.
Suresh also spoke about working with Apte, saying their characters bring compelling dynamics to the story.
Apte described Rudra as a fascinating character driven by her convictions and an instinct to challenge the world around her.
“What drew me to the series was the complexity of its characters and the tensions that emerge from their differing perspectives. Having been associated with Netflix across several projects over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to be part of some distinctive storytelling journeys, and ‘Akka’ is another intriguing addition to that association.
“Collaborating with YRF Entertainment on a story with such layered characters has been a rewarding experience, and I look forward to audiences discovering Rudra and the many dimensions of her journey,” she said.
The series has Aditya Chopra, Yogendra Mogre and Akshaye Widhani as executive producers.
