Google TV vs Android TV: 7 Key Differences

The Main Difference: Google TV and Android TV run on the same underlying Android TV OS, but their interfaces look different. Android TV focuses on apps, while Google TV brings shows, movies, and recommendations together on one screen.

Home Screen and Interface: Android TV displays rows of apps and content, making it easy to open favourite services directly. Google TV offers a more modern, content-first home screen with personalised recommendations based on viewing interests and connected streaming services.

Finding Movies and Shows: Google TV helps viewers find movies and shows across supported streaming apps without switching between them individually. Android TV also offers recommendations, but its experience depends more on the home screen and available apps.

Apps and Streaming Support: Both platforms support apps from the Google Play Store, including popular streaming services. Google TV does not automatically unlock paid content or subscriptions. App availability depends on the device, region, and streaming service.

Profiles and Watchlists: Google TV supports personalised user profiles, individual recommendations, and a watchlist that can sync across supported devices. It also offers kids' profiles with parental controls on compatible devices. Features may vary by region and model.

Live TV and Google Assistant: Both platforms support Google Assistant on compatible devices for voice searches and content discovery. Google TV also offers a Live tab where supported, but available channels and features vary by country and service.

Which Smart TV Should You Choose? Choose Google TV for personalised recommendations, convenient content discovery, and a modern interface. Android TV remains a practical option for viewers who prefer an app-focused layout. Before buying, compare the processor, RAM, picture quality, and software update support, too.
