Perth’s food scene has lost another favourite, with a popular Japanese restaurant in a prime central location announcing it has closed for good.
In a post uploaded to social media last week, the owners of Bonsai Restaurant & Cafe Lounge in Northbridge revealed that they were shutting up shop immediately.
“It is with deep regret that we announce the immediate closure of The Bonsai Restaurant and Cafe Lounge. This decision has not been made lightly,” the post began.
Despite being a prominent small business within the city, the owners shared that they had been forced to close up due to operational challenges over the years.
The owners continued: “After 17 years of trade, we have reached a point where the ongoing economic pressures, rising operating costs, and long-term disruption surrounding Roe Street have made it no longer sustainable for us to continue.
“Over the years, Roe Street and the surrounding area have endured significant changes and construction impacts, from major infrastructure works to ongoing redevelopment.
“Like many small businesses, we had hoped these changes would eventually bring renewed energy and activation to the area – unfortunately, the reality for us has been incredibly difficult.”
The much-loved venue has brought an authentic taste of Japan to Perth’s CBD for nearly two decades, with the owners of the establishment going on to thank their staff and customers for their support over the years.

“We would like to sincerely thank our staff, past and present, who have fought tirelessly to keep The Bonsai standing. Their loyalty, hard work and dedication have carried the business through many challenging years.
“To our customers, whether you visited us once, supported us regularly, celebrated special occasions with us, or became part of our extended Bonsai family — thank you.
“Your support over the past 17 years has meant more to us than we can properly express.
“Although this is a very difficult goodbye, we are deeply grateful for the memories, friendships and community that have been built through The Bonsai Restaurant.”
Hundreds of Perth locals have already rallied around the small business, sharing their heartbreak over the announcement.
“Terrible news. I had so many beautiful meals and occasions with you. Such a loss,” one person wrote.
Another regular commented: “The Bonsai has been one of our absolute favourite restaurants for so many years, with countless wonderful meals and memories along the way.”
A third added: “We have celebrated many birthdays there over the years, introduced family and friends who visited Perth to all to deliciousness on the menu.
“Hoping you will pop up in another location so all your devoted foodies can support you!”
