Malaysia’s First ‘BMW-i’ Smart Public Toilet Is Now Open In Putrajaya

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming officiated the opening of the BMW-i (Bersih, Menawan, Wangi, dan Pintar) toilet yesterday, 13 October.

The facility is located at Dataran Putra, next to the iconic pink Putra Mosque, and is intended for members of the public and tourists visiting Putrajaya.

Some of its features include:
– Automatic toilet seat covers and flushing systems
– Touchless sink taps and soap dispensers
– An Internet of Things (IoT)-controlled fragrance system
– Cubicle occupancy indicators
– Facilities for persons with disabilities (OKU)
– An automatic floor-cleaning and drying system
– A user feedback panel

Environmental sensors also allow cleaners to monitor air quality, lighting, ammonia levels, temperature, and humidity to help with maintenance.

"The use of smart technology allows cleanliness and maintenance levels to be monitored more efficiently, systematically, and continuously for the wellbeing of the people and to elevate the country's image," Nga said.

Japan, for instance, is known for its well-designed public toilets, many of which feature advanced technology and are kept exceptionally clean.

"Public toilets reflect a nation's level of civilisation, cleanliness, culture, urban image, and overall progress," Nga said, adding that the ministry has also upgraded 11,835 public toilets nationwide.

However, even with smart features and automated cleaning systems, keeping public toilets clean remains a shared responsibility.

"The government can provide top-notch facilities, but when it comes to cleanliness, it ultimately depends on our own attitudes and behaviour.

"I just have one request for everyone who uses this toilet: please take good care of it," Nga said.
