Two former police officers who were convicted of sexual offences involving a girl under the age of 16 are awaiting sentencing at the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Unchen Konjore found Steven Dawids (accused one) and Shanney Isaaks (accused two) guilty on charges under the Immoral Practices Act 21 of 1980.
In her judgment, Konjore found Dawids guilty on count one under section 14(a) of the Act, relating to sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16, while acquitting him on count two.
The court found Isaaks guilty on count two and acquitted him on count one.
The offences allegedly occurred between May and September 2018 at or near the Karasburg police barracks.
According to the judgment, the victim, Senovia Vries, testified that Dawids called her to his room and, upon his return, began kissing and touching her before attempting to have sexual intercourse with her.
The judgment states that Dawids penetrated the victim, who experienced pain and tried to push him away. She subsequently received medical treatment for a sexually transmitted infection.
The court accepted the complainant’s evidence as true and correct.
Regarding Isaaks, the judgment states that he asked Vries to clean his room at the barracks. After she finished, he allegedly touched her breasts, buttocks and private parts, kissed her and requested sex.
Vries resisted, pushed him away and returned to the hostel. The court also accepted her account as true and correct.
Both convicted men, who were police officers at the time of the offences, remain free on warning pending sentencing.
They are scheduled to be sentenced on 3 and 4 December at the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court.
