For about an hour the Canso Causeway was closed due to the swing bridge, located in Port Hastings, wouldn’t close after being open for a vessel crossing.
Nova Scotia Public Works told the Cape Breton Post in an emailed response to information on Oct. 14 that a mechanical issues was the reason the bridge was stuck open and traffic delayed about 50 minutes.
However, the root cause of the mechanical issue is still under investigation by public works staff.
Normally, a swing of the bridge takes between 11-30 minutes depending on how big the vessel coming through is.
Public Works said once staff resolved the mechanical issue that kept the Canso Causeway swing bridge to be stuck open on Oct. 13, it opened four more times that day between 11:10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
