Tura, Oct 23: The Central Puja Committee (CPC), West Garo Hills, has said the Durga Puja idol immersion ghat at Babupara in Tura was cleaned and restored by Thursday afternoon, dismissing social media claims that the site remained littered after the festivities.
CPC General Secretary Arup Nag said the cleanup was completed by 4 pm on Thursday, following a brief six-to-seven-hour interval after the immersion ceremonies to allow Durga Puja committees to collect or manage idol frames and other materials.
He said the delay was part of the cleanup schedule and that the site had been fully restored once the remaining materials were cleared.
The cleanup was carried out in coordination with the district administration, police and Tura Municipal Board, Nag said.
The committee also maintained that environmental safeguards were followed during the immersion process. The sluice gate was kept closed to prevent debris, plastic waste and floral remains from flowing downstream, and water flow was restored only after the cleaning was completed.
Nag said the CPC had urged Puja committees to avoid thermoplastic, styrofoam and other non-biodegradable materials during rituals.
He also cited monitoring by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, stating that water samples were collected before and immediately after the immersions to assess pollution levels.
According to the CPC, previous monitoring reports showed chemical levels and water pollution indicators within permitted environmental limits. The committee attributed this, in part, to the use of eco-friendly, water-soluble colours by idol makers.
Nag said the ghat was a sacred site for the Hindu community and that maintaining its cleanliness and sanctity remained a priority.
The CPC reiterated its commitment to protecting local water bodies while ensuring that religious traditions are observed with appropriate environmental safeguards.
