The AI boom is about to rewrite the rules of global philanthropy, shifting its center of gravity to Silicon Valley, where the IPOs of AI giants Anthropic and OpenAI will create the world's largest charitable organizations.
Why it matters: Rather than massive donations earmarked for renaming hospital wings or university graduate programs, expect the new wave of giving to mirror startup culture: flexible capital, ambitious bets and a search for measurable impact.
Driving the news: Anthropic announced Sunday that it plans to launch a massive benefit fund with 5% of its shares.
Zoom in: The company's pledge — which would amount to $100 billion if it reaches a value of $2 trillion in its IPO — will go to a public benefit fund and is set to grow as its valuation rises.
- Anthropic says the fund will be a wholly owned LLC, giving it flexibility to make large donations to nonprofits or distribute money directly to specific populations.
- The commitment builds on the pledges of co-founders to give away 80% of their equity. A program available to early Anthropic hires and used by a large number of company staffers matched donations at a 3:1 ratio. The company says roughly half its employees participate in donation-matching.
- The company says the fund's shares will not be used for lobbying or political giving in the U.S. or abroad.
The big picture: Anthropic is joining OpenAI, which is controlled by a nonprofit foundation that holds a 26% equity stake in the company, worth about $130 billion based on the company's current valuation. The foundation has the power to appoint OpenAI's board.
What they're saying: Anthropic says much of its public-benefit work — including AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research and discounts for nonprofits and scientific institutions — will continue inside the company.
- The new fund is intended to make other kinds of giving possible at greater scale, the company says.
- Anthropic cited AI's effects on the labor market as one potential use and said it has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue, but that "bolder approaches may be needed."
- Anthropic has not specified what those approaches would be, or whether the fund would make direct payments to workers affected by AI.
Between the lines: Anthropic's founders and some employees have close ties to effective altruism, a movement ostensibly dedicated to directing resources toward causes where they may do the most good.
- Effective altruism has come under sharp criticism from the Trump White House, which has emphasized aspects of the movement that are far from the philanthropic mainstream.
- Those include an acute interest in animal welfare, as well as seemingly abstract ponderings about the value of life, including comparing that of an infant to an adult, or future people to present people.
- In an X post, Taylor Budowich, a former White House official, highlighted one such comment from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in 2010, when he said in a blog post that an adult death is "perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death."
- Budowich also shared a few other "insane beliefs of those who make up Anthropic and how they think about prioritizing charitable giving."
The bottom line: Anthropic's fund — and the charitable giving of a massive new cadre of millionaires and deca-millionaires — could become one of the largest vehicles for new giving.
- The bigger change may come with a new generation of Silicon Valley donors aiming to reset the agenda of modern philanthropy.
