Love Edges Jake Finch by Just 0.002 Seconds
Jesse Love continued his impressive qualifying run at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, capturing the pole position for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series’ Progress Group 250. The Richard Childress Racing driver narrowly beat Jake Finch in an incredibly close final round, securing his fifth consecutive pole at the Alabama superspeedway.
Driving the No. 2 Chevrolet, Love posted a lap of 52.435 seconds at 182.626 mph to claim the top starting position. Finch came remarkably close in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, finishing just 0.002 seconds behind Love.
The result continued Love’s strong qualifying record at Talladega and gave the defending series champion another opportunity to start a major race at the front of the field.
Love Praises His Team
Love credited the preparation of his Richard Childress Racing team for helping him secure another pole. He also highlighted the work of the crew and engine team as important factors in his continued success.
The pole marked the 12th of Love’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series career. With the championship battle approaching its final races, starting up front could prove valuable as he looks to protect his position in the standings.
However, Talladega presents a unique challenge. The superspeedway’s high speeds and tightly packed drafting groups can quickly change the running order, meaning even the fastest qualifier must navigate traffic and avoid trouble throughout the race.
Strong Competition Behind Love
Finch will start alongside Love on the front row after delivering an impressive qualifying performance in just his seventh career series start.
Sam Mayer qualified third, followed by Carson Kvapil in fourth and Austin Hill in fifth. Rajah Caruth secured sixth, while Anthony Alfredo, Brent Crews, William Sawalich and Corey Day rounded out the top 10 in qualifying.
Day will have additional work to do after an engine issue forced his team to make a change. Despite qualifying inside the top 10, he is expected to start from the rear of the field. Three drivers—Lavar Scott, Carson Ware and Patrick Emerling—failed to qualify for the race.
Can Love Turn the Pole Into a Victory?
The Progress Group 250 is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Talladega, with coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET on The CW. <Cite refs={[“turn650841search0″,”turn650841search12”]}/>
Love has already accomplished the first major objective by securing the pole. Now, he will try to convert that speed into a victory while navigating one of NASCAR’s most unpredictable tracks.
With Finch close behind and several championship contenders starting near the front, Love will have plenty of competition. His fifth straight Talladega pole is another impressive achievement, but the real challenge begins when the green flag waves.
