The film, set to premiere in Israel on November 26, had a massive opening weekend in North America, opening to box office numbers not seen in more than 20 years for a narrative documentary.
The most talked-about documentary of the year is heading to the big screen in Israel.
Following months of intense anticipation, You Can See Everything will premiere in theaters here on November 26, according to Forum Film, the official distributor of Sony Pictures, which recently bought the international rights for the A24 film.
Acclaimed filmmaker Lance Oppenheim and celebrated comedian and creator Nathan Fielder co-direct the intriguing project. The documentary has already generated massive online buzz, with its viral trailer capturing global attention and earning a stellar 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
At the heart of the film is Elizabeth Holmes, the infamous founder of Theranos, who was convicted of defrauding investors and sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. The documentary offers an unprecedented, intimate look at Holmes and her family, capturing their lives in the final weeks leading up to her imprisonment.
Holmes remains one of the most notorious figures of the modern tech era. She successfully deceived high-profile investors across politics, business, and academia by falsely promising a revolutionary medical technology that would change the world.
Feature promises different perspective than previous Theranos documentary
While the bizarre details of the Theranos affair were previously explored in the 2019 documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, this new feature promises a radically different perspective.
In a characteristically immersive approach, Fielder lived in Holmes’s guesthouse for 34 days. During this time, he and Oppenheim closely documented her day-to-day life. Early glimpses and trailers reveal a painfully close, raw portrait of a woman who managed to fool some of the sharpest minds in Silicon Valley.
After releasing in North America this weekend, the film has already opened to box office numbers not seen in more than 20 years for a narrative documentary.
Film earns $15 million on opening weekend
You Can See Everything earned $15 million on opening weekend, according to Variety.
That’s well short of the $23.9 million record Michael Moore set in 2004 with Fahrenheit 9/11, but very impressive for a documentary that isn’t a concert or tour film.
By comparison, Melania, the Amazon documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, made $7.1 million at opening in January. That film is said to have cost $40 million to make and market. It earned just over $16.6 million in total, according to Box Office Mojo.
Reports estimate that You Can See Everything was made on a budget of around $6 million.
Veteran film writer Peter Travers suggested in his review that You Can See Everything may compete with The Odyssey to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. No documentary has won that Oscar.
