The Senate has called for the urgent repeal and re-enactment of Nigeria’s century-old Quarantine Act of 1926, following reports of an imported Ebola case in Abuja.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Senator Francis Faduyile, amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s preparedness to contain the spread of infectious diseases.
Lawmakers are demanding compulsory health screening for all international travellers at airports, seaports and land borders, alongside the deployment of trained health personnel and adequate screening equipment.
The Senate also urged the Federal Government to immediately release emergency funds from the Service-Wide Votes to strengthen the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and Port Health Services.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio criticised inadequate health checks at airports, describing the situation as a wake-up call for the country.
Lawmakers further called for the establishment of sanitary stations at entry points and the strengthening of isolation and treatment facilities nationwide to prevent further transmission.
