Kathmandu, October 14
Giribahadur Sunar, Nepal’s proposed resident ambassador to Saudi Arabia, has denied allegations of violence against women.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Hearing Committee, he said he was someone who raised public awareness against violence against women.
During the hearing, lawmaker Madhukumar Chaulagain referred to several complaints against Sunar, including allegations of domestic violence against women and claims that the matter had been settled through reconciliation.
Chaulagain recalled complaints alleging that Sunar had collected crores of rupees in the name of activism, attempted to influence a promotion to the post of DIG in exchange for money, and taken money on the promise of making someone a member of parliament.
Sunar was also questioned about his association with the Hamro Nepal Party and allegations that he had been deported from Germany.
In response, Sunar denied the allegations of violence against women.
“Regarding the allegations that I committed violence against women, I am someone who raises public awareness against such violence,” he said.
However, he acknowledged having had a romantic relationship with the woman who had described herself as a victim and said they had argued. He complained that the matter had been resolved in 2013 but was being raised again.
Sunar also said he had trained more than 5,000 people on preventing violence against women and promoting self-empowerment.
He also denied the allegation that he had been deported from Germany.
