LeBron James urged the Philadelphia 76ersto remain patient despite an impressive 106-100 victory over the New York Knicks, warning that their championship ambitions will require time, chemistry and adjustments after a major offseason rebuild.
The 41-year-old began his record 24th NBA season with 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists, helping Philadelphia overcome the reigning champions as Tyrese Maxey led the way with 28 points, while newcomer Jaylen Brown contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
“It’s going to take some time,” James said. “It’s just one game, but obviously we can learn from the good things that we did. We’re still new to each other. We will have some bumps in the road at times.
“But I mean, I think tonight when we had those bumps in the road, we were able to use what happened previously and then make the adjustment.”
The message was a reminder that one encouraging result cannot immediately transform a group of new teammates into a championship contender as James understands the demands of winning at the highest level.
Now Philadelphia must now turn its opening-night promise into consistent performances if they hope to beat star names such as Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama and Steph Curry over the course of the season.
The victory was significant as Philadelphia toppled the defending champions at Madison Square Garden, however, the opening stages against New York showed that talent alone would not guarantee immediate success.
The 76ers struggled to find their rhythm before gradually improving, with their ability to respond to adversity proving decisive in the second half, but a late third-quarter surge changed the momentum.
The Knicks threatened to recover, cutting the deficit to one point at 96-95 after Karl-Anthony Towns connected from beyond the arc but Joel Embiid answered with a three-pointer of his own, helping Philadelphia maintain control and secure a statement victory.
The 76ers closed the third period with an 11-0 run, capped by Brown's second consecutive three-pointer at the buzzer, establishing an 83-76 advantage – and LeBron feels the ex-Celtic will be key for the team maintaining their high standards.
“He’s just another guy that can hold guys accountable because they understand,” LeBron added. “They see a guy that has gotten to the finish line.
“It’s definitely very helpful. These guys that have been here are trying to be able to get to that point, obviously this is a marathon, and we’re not going to do it in day one.
“But the experience that we have, the experience that we bring to this ball club, hopefully we can translate it to wins and more.”
Brown won the NBA Finals MVP award in 2024 when Boston captured the championship, while James brings four titles and decades of postseason experience, and that kind of pedigree and leadership could prove crucial.
Now the 76ers next challenge comes against the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 22, giving James a personal return to the franchise where he began his career in 2003 – famously winning the 2016 NBA Finals against all odds.
