The Detroit Lions didn't even play last weekend since it was their bye week, but quarterback Jared Goff is still making noise around the league. Goff is having a strong season, even if the Lions' 3-2 record doesn't really show that.
The Lions went into their bye week after pulling off a statement win over the Arizona Cardinals, 45-21. They're still not high in the NFC North, however, and that has to change for their playoff chances to improve.
After the NFL's Week 6 games, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports released a feature looking at the current class of quarterbacks and pointing out what's going right and wrong with them. For Goff, Podell clearly puts him in the right category.
Jared Goff is putting up impressive numbers without throwing a single interception
Goff, Podell points out, has zero interceptions during the 2026-27 season, and he has 12 passing touchdowns, one behind San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. That's huge. He's also "tied for the most passing touchdowns without an interception by any quarterback through the first five games of a season in NFL history along with Russell Wilson in 2019," Podell notes.
Goff also has 1,485 passing yards, second in the NFL to former Lion and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford's 1,572.
"After he toasted the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday to the tune of 271 yards and three passing touchdowns on 19 of 30 passing plus an additional rushing touchdown, Goff is playing like top-three quarterback in football," Podell says.
So, if the Lions can get their defense stronger, this is a team that should seriously scare other teams. The defense doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to help keep points off the board for the opposition and buy some time for the offense to rest.
