Shillong, Oct 21: The East Khasi Hills District Administration has issued eviction notices to roadside vendors operating along the Shillong-Dawki Road (NH-05), particularly at the 4th Mile and 7th Mile stretches in Upper Shillong, as part of efforts to remove unauthorised encroachments along national highways.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said the administration is examining the replies submitted by the vendors. These will be reviewed jointly with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) before a decision is taken on further action.
The move follows safety concerns raised by local shnong (village) authorities and observations made by the Meghalaya High Court.
Alongside the eviction process, the district administration has directed the Excise Department to conduct targeted raids following reports of illegal liquor resale along the 4th Mile and 7th Mile stretches.
Officials have conducted three to four rounds of raids and seized multiple cartons and empty bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL).
The district administration and NHIDCL will complete their assessment of the vendors’ replies before deciding on the next steps.
Formal clearance drives are expected to follow the legal review as authorities move to address encroachments along the Shillong-Dawki highway corridor.
