Healthcare is entering an era where technology can detect, analyze, and treat conditions in ways that would have seemed impossible a generation ago.
Yet as medical innovation accelerates, a new problem is emerging: patients are being surrounded by more healthcare technology than ever before, while many are still trying to understand what that technology actually means for them.
Billions are being invested in artificial intelligence, advanced medical devices, and digital health systems designed to transform patient care.
But a machine sitting inside a clinic does not automatically create trust, confidence, or better decisions. Without explanation, even the most advanced technology can become little more than a black box between a provider and a patient.
...
The modern healthcare challenge is no longer only developing better tools. It is ensuring people can understand the tools they are being asked to consider.
Patients are not walking into clinics asking, “How advanced is your equipment?” They are asking, “What does this mean for my health, my body, and my future?”
This question is becoming increasingly urgent as healthcare decisions move online. A June 2026 KFF poll found that 31 percent of U.S. adults use social media at least monthly for health information and advice.
As patients increasingly search for answers before speaking with a provider, the challenge is not simply access to information, but helping patients assess its reliability and understand what it means for their individual circumstances.
This shift creates both an opportunity and a responsibility for healthcare providers. Technology may open the door, but communication determines whether patients understand what they are walking into.
The Human Process
Too often, healthcare innovation is presented through the lens of the equipment itself. A new device arrives, a practice highlights its capabilities, and patients are shown what the technology looks like.
But the machine is rarely the part of the experience that creates trust.
Providers should help patients understand who will be operating the technology, what a consultation involves, and what questions they may wish to ask. The technology matters, but the human process surrounding it matters just as much.
This is why clear communication has become a critical part of modern healthcare. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on health products emphasizes that audiences interpret health-related claims based on the complete impression created by words, images, and context.
For providers, this means introducing a new technology requires more than listing features or highlighting potential benefits. The explanation must reflect available evidence, acknowledge limitations, and avoid creating expectations that go beyond what can reasonably be supported.
Building Understanding
Visual communication plays an important role in that process. A photograph of advanced equipment may demonstrate capability, but it does not tell patients what the experience will be like.
Seeing the provider, the clinical environment, and the consultation process can answer questions that a piece of equipment alone cannot.
Through my work as founder and CEO of The Garen Group, I have seen this challenge firsthand among medical practices introducing services such as shockwave therapy and spinal decompression.
The practices that build understanding do not simply showcase what they offer. They explain why it matters and who is behind the service.
When several practices offer similar technology, the difference may not be the equipment itself. Patients often make decisions based on confidence in the provider, clarity around the process, and whether they feel informed before taking the next step.
One approach I encourage practices to consider is educational video content recorded within the clinical setting. A provider can explain the purpose of a service, introduce the practice environment, and walk patients through what typically happens during an initial consultation.
The goal is not to replace medical advice or convince someone that a treatment is right for them. The goal is to create a clearer starting point for a conversation with a qualified professional.
Healthcare Journeys
This distinction is especially important as healthcare information becomes easier to access online. Digital content can explain a service, introduce a provider, and answer common questions.
It cannot evaluate a patient’s individual circumstances or determine whether a treatment is appropriate.
The same principle applies after someone expresses interest. Follow-up communication should continue educating patients about the practice and the general nature of a service while recognizing that personalized medical decisions belong in the clinical setting.
Healthcare does not need more technology without explanation. It needs technology paired with understanding.
As medical innovation continues to accelerate, the providers who succeed will not simply be the ones with the newest equipment.
They will be the ones who help patients understand what that innovation means, why it matters, and how it fits into their healthcare journey.
Communication is not separate from healthcare innovation. It is what allows innovation to reach the people it is designed to serve.
