Former Inspector General of Police Rodney Jose has died after a short illness, the National Police has confirmed.

Jose passed away at ABC Clinic in Lilongwe, where he was rushed after falling ill.
National Police spokesperson Gladys Chiwaula confirmed the sad news, saying: “Yes, we can confirm that he has died. We are also gathering details; we will share more later.”
The loss marks the end of a long and distinguished career.
Jose served in the Malawi Police Service for 36 years, climbing through the ranks to become the 18th Inspector General since the force was established.
He was appointed acting IG in April 2018, taking over from Lexten Kachama, and Parliament confirmed him in the top job that June.
He served for around a year and four months before retiring in 2019.
His time at the helm coincided with some of the most turbulent days in recent Malawian history.
The 2019 demonstrations, in which opposition supporters and civil society groups protested the presidential election results and demanded a fresh poll, put the police under intense pressure.
Duncan Mwapasa later took over as IG.
