Nomba is extending its cross-border payments infrastructure into Zambia through licensed local partners, targeting businesses trading along a corridor where bilateral commerce is growing.
The expansion builds on the business banking and financial infrastructure platform’s existing operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where businesses can collect and make payments in U.S. dollars and Congolese francs. The new corridor will enable Congolese businesses to pay Zambian suppliers in dollars or Congolese francs through bank accounts and mobile wallets.
Zambia’s goods exports to the DRC reached $1.6 billion in 2025, up about a third from the previous year, according to the Bank of Zambia. Growing trade between the neighboring countries is creating demand for payment services that help businesses settle transactions across borders without tying up working capital in delays and foreign exchange constraints.
“The ambition to grow intra-African trade has outpaced the financial infrastructure needed to support it,” Nomba Chief Executive Officer Yinka Adewale said. The company aims to make it easier for African businesses to trade and expand beyond their domestic markets, he said.
Founded in 2016, Nomba has grown from a payments business into a business banking and financial infrastructure platform processing more than $70 billion in annualized payments. It is targeting monthly cross-border payment volumes exceeding $1 billion as it expands into additional markets.
The company plans to raise another funding round to support its expansion and broaden its financial services offering. Beyond cross-border payments, Nomba aims to provide businesses with deposits, foreign exchange and credit as its partnerships and market presence develop.
