Alongside socks and sandals, anoraks and hiking gear, corduroy trousers are the latest in a long line of “dweeb”-coded items to have been co-opted by the fashion girlies. Over the past few seasons, The Row, Loewe and even the queen of polish herself, Victoria Beckham, have all staked their claim on the professorial style, which, for context, was once more likely to be associated with The Wurzels. “I wore brand new gaters and me corduroy pants,” the band sang in their 1976 hit The Combine Harvester. Probably not the reference VB had pinned to her moodboard.
Yet, as we all know, fashion’s ability to cool-ify something knows no bounds, and following their fashion week comeback tour in 2025, cords of every cut and colour have cropped up in the collections of contemporary designers and high-street brands alike. But, as with any trend, not all cords are created equal – particularly on the high street – and after much trial and error, we’ve found one pair from M&S that we’re more than happy to give our seal of approval.

Clearly, we’re not alone in our obsession. Within weeks of launching, the trousers had sold out multiple times, but we’re pleased to report that they’re finally back in stock. Coming in the perfect shade of buttery caramel, with a subtle barrel-leg fit, these cords are the perfect autumnal alternative to your most-trusted pair of jeans. Better still, they are far more comfortable than your average true blues, and feel more like wearing tracksuit bottoms, thanks to their soft cotton fabric.
Keen to avoid an ankle-flashing crop (a common pitfall of barrel-leg trousers), I ordered a pair in the “long” length for both myself and my colleague Mia. We’re both around 5ft 7in, and can confirm that the extra fabric looks even better turned up. As for sizing, we both prefer a slouchier fit and a lower waistline, so Mia opted for a UK 12 (she usually wears an 8-10), while I went for a UK 14 (though, at eight months pregnant, I had to size up twice from my usual UK 10). Styling-wise, I’ll be wearing mine with colourful crew-neck knits and loafers, while Mia is taking a more casual approach, pairing hers with layered skater-style tees and ballet pumps. One final word of warning: these trousers are sure to sell out again. Don’t say we didn’t tell you.
