Muscat: The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Sultanate of Oman hosted a Korean Speech Contest at the National Museum - Sultanate of Oman on 10 October 2026 to mark Hangeul Day. The event was supported by the National Museum - Sultanate of Oman, the Korean Association in Oman, and the United Korean Associations in Africa and the Middle East.
Hangeul Day, observed annually on 9 October, celebrates the Korean alphabet. The contest provided an opportunity for Korean language learners in Oman to share their thoughts and experiences, demonstrate their progress, and connect with others who share an interest in Korea.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Lee Jung-il, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Sultanate of Oman, noted that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day. He encouraged participants to use their Korean language skills to play an important role in promoting exchanges between Korea and Oman.
Fourteen participants delivered speeches in Korean, competing in three groups according to how long they had studied the language.
The programme also featured promotional videos introducing Korea and a presentation by a representative of Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) alumni in Oman. Drawing on her experience of living and studying in Korea, she offered the audience a personal perspective on student life and introduced GKS, a Korean government scholarship programme for international students.
Alongside the speech contest, a Korean child and his family explored the National Museum’s exhibits. With the museum’s support, the child expressed his impressions of Oman’s history and heritage through writing and then presented his work to the audience.
By bringing together Korean language learners and Korean children discovering Oman’s heritage, the event encouraged mutual understanding and provided a welcoming setting for people to learn about one another’s language and culture.
