According to sources with insight into the plan who spoke to the Financial Times (FT), Israel planned to bomb Iran over the weekend around October 10. The bombing would be extensive and target civilian infrastructure such as power plants and nuclear facilities.
But the plans were halted by the United States, at least temporarily.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told the newspaper that "the United States will not attack Iran at any time before the midterm elections."
One of the FT's sources said it was not an "unreasonable scenario" that the attacks would resume in the coming weeks.
"It will either be a deal or an attack," the source told the newspaper.
