For decades, names like Bose, Marshall, Bang & Olufsen and KEF have shaped how the world listens to music. Their dominance was built on one simple premise: better sound came from bigger hardware, larger cabinets, larger drivers and speakers designed to be seen and admired.
But that premise is increasingly getting at odds with how modern spaces are being designed today. Architects and homeowners are favouring clean walls, minimal interiors and technology that fits seamlessly into the room instead of dominating it.
The shift has put one of consumer electronics’ oldest categories in a difficult spot: speakers. Good quality speakers need physical space to deliver the depth, power and clarity that listeners expect. Manufacturers have tried to shrink the hardware, but making it smaller meant compromising on sound quality that made the product desirable in the first place — a trade-off the industry has largely lived with rather than solved.
For Utkarsh Hora, the cofounder of Canadian architectural audio startup XSCACE, audio was part of his family history. His grandfather, Bansi Lal Hora, had worked with Philips in Thailand before returning to India, where he began repairing high-end audio equipment. His father, Manoj Hora, carried that experience forward, building a business around premium audio installations. For Utkarsh, speakers and audio systems were therefore less a hobby than a part of everyday life.
During his time at the University of Toronto, he began wondering whether high-performance audio really needed to take up so much space. The question eventually became the starting point for XSCACE, which Utkarsh founded in 2022. He set out to build speakers that could deliver high-quality sound without taking over a room or compromising its design.
The challenge, however, was rooted in a fundamental constraint of speaker design known as Hoffman’s Iron Law. According to the law, a designer can optimise for only two of three things at once: deep bass, a small enclosure and high efficiency. XSCACE’s challenge was to push the boundaries of that trade-off without compromising the quality of sound.
After two years of development and testing, XSCACE made its first commercial sale in January 2024. Today, the brand has a range of ultra-compact speakers built around six proprietary technologies. It is expanding its distribution across international markets.
How XSCACE Is Reinventing The Wheel
When Utkarsh started his entrepreneurial journey, he observed that modern luxury spaces were becoming increasingly minimal. Architects and interior designers wanted clean walls, hidden wiring and fewer visible fixtures.
Speakers, however, remained stubbornly hard to hide. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers existed, but they often came with a compromise. Products that blended into the architecture could fall short on sound, while speakers built for stronger performance typically needed more space.
The fundamental challenge stemmed from a long-standing principle of speaker design known as Hoffman’s Iron Law. It describes the trade-off between a speaker’s size, bass response and efficiency. Improving one typically means giving up something elsewhere.
Rather than accept the rules as they were, the founder began by rethinking what sat at the speaker’s centre: the driver. In a sense, Utkarsh was trying to reinvent the wheel.
Instead of optimising individual components in isolation, XSCACE approached the speaker as one interconnected system. Driver geometry, motor design, cone materials, crossover architecture, cabinet construction and thermal management were developed together, with each element designed to work within the constraints of the others.
“We didn’t eliminate the trade-off altogether but became far more intentional about where it exists,” the founder said.
This paved the way for the foundation of six proprietary technologies, each tackling a different part of the performance equation. These are as follows:
- Nano Resonance: To focus on ultra-compact driver performance
- PowerDense Dynamics: Extracts higher output from miniature motors
- AeroFrame Chassis: Reduces resonance
- PrecisionXover Array: Solves for seamless driver integration
- XS-Flow: For Airflow and bass response
- PsySculpt: Creates a more convincing spatial experience through psychoacoustic tuning
“Among these, Nano Resonance was one of the hardest pieces to develop,” the founder said, adding that the challenge was to get deep bass, high output and low distortion from a miniature driver while maintaining long-term reliability.
From Prototype To Production
A prototype that performs exceptionally in controlled conditions does not automatically translate into a product that can be manufactured consistently. So the next big task was to turn that engineering into a product that could be manufactured consistently without losing performance.
The founder had to revisit parts of the product with manufacturability and repeatability in mind.
“It’s one thing to build a prototype and altogether a different ball game to build the exact same product at scale,” he said.
While spending on simulation, prototyping, testing and refinement across acoustics, mechanical design, materials and manufacturing, the founder had to build a multidisciplinary team and invest in engineering capabilities.
After rigorous experimentation, testing and improving the designs, the founder was finally able to turn its two products, Bonsai and Cane, from early experimental concepts into actual products that were ready to be manufactured and sold.
- Bonsai: An ultra-slim, compact speaker that is just 12 mm deep and delivers 40W. It is designed to be mounted discreetly on walls or installed in walls or ceilings.
- Cane: A slightly larger 23 mm-thin slim-array speaker with 50W output, designed for spaces where you want more output while keeping the speaker visually unobtrusive.
Building More Than Speakers
Utkarsh’s quest didn’t end with making speakers compact and minimal. From the outset, he saw software as an extension of his product lineup.
“I did not want our products to depend entirely on third-party software,” he said.
Therefore, he started developing an in-house software ecosystem. Today, the brand offers an AI Configurator to help architects, designers and integrators plan and configure audio systems, alongside a companion app for users and the Xylem DSP Controller, which lets installers fine-tune sound based on a room’s acoustics.
Over time, the AI Configurator is expected to become more than a planning tool. Utkarsh sees it evolving into a broader platform that can support installation, calibration, optimisation and ongoing system management. The software strategy also reflects where he wants to take XSCACE as a business.
“Our five-year vision is to establish XSCACE as a global reference in premium architectural audio,” he said, adding that broader plans include expanding beyond loudspeakers into software, DSP, amplification and complementary products, while strengthening its presence in India and expanding across the US, Europe and the Middle East.
For him, growth is not just about revenue or entering more markets. He measures the brand’s progress through its engineering, intellectual property, product consistency and the trust it builds with architects, integrators and customers.
In many ways, that brings XSCACE back to the problem that started it.
The brand did not set out simply to build smaller speakers. It wanted to challenge the assumption that high-performance audio had to remain visible.
Now, as XSCACE moves from compact architectural speakers towards a broader audio ecosystem, the original idea remains at the centre of the brand: build small, think big and make every inch punch above its weight.
