Enes Kanter Freedom wanted to attend the WNBA Finals. Instead, his night in Atlanta ended before he could watch the game from his purchased seat.
The former NBA center was denied entry to Game 3 between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday. The dispute centered on a private suite that arena officials arranged for his security.
Freedom had previously raised concerns about his personal safety with the WNBA, the Dream and arena officials. In response, State Farm Arena directed him to watch from a private suite with additional security.
Freedom refused the arrangement, insisting he should be allowed to sit in the seats he purchased. As a result, he did not enter the arena to watch the game.
Afterward, Freedom posted a video on social media claiming he had been kicked out of a WNBA game for the second consecutive time for supporting women.
The incident quickly reignited debate surrounding his campaign against transgender athletes competing in women’s basketball. His activism has drawn both support and criticism, making him one of the most polarizing figures connected to the league.
However, the latest dispute also raises a separate question: Should a ticket holder be allowed to choose his seat when arena officials cite security concerns?
The Dream and arena officials said the suite arrangement was intended to address Freedom’s safety concerns while protecting other guests. Freedom, meanwhile, maintained that he should be able to use the ticket he purchased.
The controversy follows a separate incident in August, when Freedom was ejected from a Chicago Sky game after a heated interaction with guard Natasha Cloud. He was subsequently banned from the arena.
Meanwhile, the basketball continued without him in Atlanta. The Dream defeated the Valkyries 97-71 to take a 2-1 lead in the WNBA Finals.
For a league already facing heated debates about gender, player safety and public scrutiny, the latest incident added another combustible storyline to its biggest stage.
Freedom wanted a seat at the Finals. Instead, his dispute with arena officials became another headline in the ongoing WNBA culture war.
