MADRID: Real Madrid winger Yan Diomande is beginning to show his potential following his club-record €140 million transfer from RB Leipzig.
Diomande scored a long-range goal in Sunday's 4-1 La Liga win over Sevilla ahead of today's Champions League match against his former club.
The 19-year-old was signed during the summer after impressing at the 2026 World Cup.
Diomande spent one season at Leipzig after leaving Spanish club Leganes.
His arrival, however, added to a crowded attack.
On the same day Diomande signed, Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior extended his contract until 2032.
Madrid had already struggled to balance an attack featuring Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius.
Diomande scored his first goal for the club on Oct 10, securing a 1-0 win against Villarreal.
Vinicius was sent off in that match and received a four-game ban, allowing Diomande to start on the left wing against Sevilla.
In total, Diomande has two goals and three assists in 11 appearances.
"He has a lot to improve; he's young, and he's still naive. He's still not the finished article," said Jose Mourinho on Sunday.
"At Real Madrid, the demands are very high, but he had a great game; he's growing."
Vinicius is available for European matches, but Diomande is hoping for another start today as Madrid seek a third win in three Champions League games. — AFP
