Madhuri Dixit Nene is never not championing saris. For Vijayadashami, the actor wore a purple Banarasi sari from designer Sanjay Garg’s label Raw Mango with floral motifs contained within paisley-shaped buttas.
The butas, inspired by the inlay work seen in Mughal and Rajputana architecture, were made using a weaving technique known as kadwa, in which each motif is woven separately. At least two weavers work on one sari, one on the body and the other on the motif. The motif itself has a long history in Indian wear. It travelled from Persia to Kashmir in the 1400s, many Indian languages link its shape to the mango, calling it kairi or ambi. Dixit Nene wore the sari with a matching backless blouse with traditional mid-length sleeves. The gold border on the sleeves tied in with the border of the pallu.

Stylist Sukriti Grover went with jewellery from PNG Jewels. Dixit Nene's earrings were set with diamonds and polki, with a square top that dropped into a pendant flanked by a pair of birds, echoing the floral work in the butas. She wore two statement cocktail rings, and a matching kada with diamonds set in polki that gave it a cohesive finish.
Dixit Nene's hair was swept up into a messy bun with a voluminous top, tendrils framing her face and pink chrysanthemums and baby's breath tucked in. Makeup artist Billy Manik went for soft glam, with highlighted cheekbones, glossy lips, light pink eyeshadow and a purple bindi.
From the Vogue desk:
“Purple or aubergine colour is a popular choice among wearers of Indian saris. This season, we are seeing a resurgence in its popularity. I suggest turning to navratna jewellery to wear with classic Indian saris in jewel tones for completing the ceremonial look, and turn to kitten heels with gold embroidery for the footwear,” says Ashwini Arun Kumar, Vogue India fashion features editor
