Duke player faces backlash after athletic trainer is pushed aside during injury scare

Duke cornerback Kimari Robinson is facing intense criticism after an incident involving a female athletic trainer during the Blue Devils’ 24-20 loss to Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday. The incident, which was captured on television and circulated widely on social media, occurred in the third quarter as medical personnel rushed onto the field to assist an injured Duke player.

Robinson had approached his teammate, DaShawn Stone, who was down on the turf, but the situation took an uncomfortable turn when an athletic trainer tried to move him aside to reach the injured player. Robinson appeared to react by swatting the trainer’s arm away. The staffer briefly looked startled before returning her attention to Stone, who required medical attention and was eventually able to leave the field under his own power.

The exchange became a major talking point, overshadowing parts of a rivalry game that ended with North Carolina earning a 24-20 victory over Duke. The incident could bring scrutiny from head coach Manny Diaz and the university. However, as of the latest reports, no official disciplinary decision had been announced.

Fans demand consequences for Kimari Robinson

The reaction on social media was swift, with many viewers arguing that Robinson should have allowed the medical staff to do its job rather than physically responding when the trainer moved him out of the way. One fan called for the university to investigate the incident and suggested that Robinson should face consequences for his conduct.

The criticism also extended beyond anonymous fans. Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III weighed in on the controversy, posting: “As a man, this just can’t happen. No excuses for it.” The central concern for many viewers was not that Robinson wanted to check on his teammate.

It was that an athletic trainer trying to reach an injured player appeared to encounter resistance from someone who was not providing medical care. Athletic trainers play a critical role during on-field emergencies. They must be able to reach injured players quickly, assess their condition and coordinate care without unnecessary interference. When a potentially serious injury occurs, even a brief delay or distraction can complicate an already stressful situation.

Could Manny Diaz suspend or remove Robinson from the team?

The incident puts Diaz in a difficult position as he manages his team's response to a highly visible controversy. A coach must consider a player's conduct, the circumstances surrounding an incident and the standards expected of everyone representing the program. Diaz and Duke could review the broadcast footage, speak with the athletic trainer and other witnesses, and determine whether disciplinary action is warranted.

Possible responses could range from an internal reprimand or additional conduct training to a suspension, depending on the findings and applicable team policies. More severe punishment would be a decision for the university and coaching staff, not something that can be established by social media reactions alone.

There is also an important distinction between recognizing Robinson's apparent concern for his teammate and excusing his response. Seeing a close friend or teammate injured can be an emotional experience, particularly in the middle of a physical football game. But that concern does not eliminate the need to give medical personnel the space and authority to do their jobs.

Robinson's intentions cannot be determined from a short video alone. The footage does, however, show an exchange that has raised legitimate questions about how players should respond when medical staff need immediate access to an injured teammate. As of the latest available reporting, Duke had not announced a punishment for Robinson.
