Rain lashed the coastal district of Ramanathapuram and in the last 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Thursday, Thangachimadam recorded 83.10 mm rainfall, officials said.
Following the Northeast monsoon turning active across many southern districts, Ramanathapuram too experienced torrential rains since the early hours of Thursday.
Many low lying areas in the district, particularly, Thangachimadam, Mandapam, Pamban and a few other locations around the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple reported waterlogging.
The district administration has appealed to the residents to stay indoors during rain and not to venture into the open fields grazing animals. There were a few reports of lightning and thunder in some parts on Wednesday night.
The fishermen in the district said that many habitations were under water and low lying areas were inundated in Thoppukaadu.
Similarly, there were problems faced by tourists near Lakshmana Theertham and the panchayat office in Rameswaram was also surrounded by rain water.
A senior officer in the fire and rescue service department said that there were a few fire calls on trees being uprooted on the highway towards Thirupullani. However, there were no casualties as the incident occurred in the early hours due to abnormal wind conditions.
The Fisheries Department officials said that the sea was a little rough and as a precautionary measure, they have advised fishermen to stay away from fishing due to heavy rain forecast for the next three to five days.
Though there were complaints of power cuts, Tangedco officials said that they had switched off electricity as a precaution. After the rain subsided, the power was switched on in phased manner in many pockets across the district.
