DIMAPUR: A delegation of the Nagaland Rhododendron Society (NRS) called on Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Monday to share its conservation journey and seek support for strengthening rhododendron conservation initiatives in the state.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted its journey that began in 2017 with the conservation of a few rhododendron saplings as a family initiative, which has since grown into a broader commitment to protect Nagaland’s rich rhododendron heritage. This eventually led to the formation of the Nagaland Rhododendron Society, with a vision to promote community based conservation, environmental awareness and protection of the state’s unique biodiversity.
The Society apprised the Governor of its ongoing efforts at Jakhama, including rescue and nurturing of saplings, plantation activities and involvement of local communities and youth in environmental protection.
A key proposal presented was the establishment of the Jakhama Rhododendron Conservation Centre, envisioned as a dedicated hub for conservation, research, documentation, environmental education and eco tourism. Strategically located between Kisama and the Dzukou Valley, the proposed centre is expected to become an important destination for biodiversity conservation and nature based tourism in Nagaland.
The delegation also emphasised the need for a state level rhododendron conservation initiative to protect species and habitats from threats such as forest fires, habitat degradation and environmental disturbances. The Society expressed its commitment to collaborate with the government, local communities, educational institutions and other stakeholders to advance these objectives.
The meeting marked a milestone in the Society’s efforts to transform a small family initiative into a broader movement for the protection of Nagaland’s natural heritage.
The Nagaland Rhododendron Society expressed gratitude to the Governor for granting the audience and providing an opportunity to present its vision for rhododendron conservation in the state.
