Ghandruk, October 19
Traditional stone-roofed houses, breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre mountains, and the rich culture of the Gurung community are drawing increasing numbers of domestic and international tourists to Ghandruk village in Kaski district.
Located in Annapurna Rural Municipality, Ghandruk has emerged as a popular tourist destination, offering visitors warm hospitality, mountain scenery and an opportunity to experience Gurung art, culture and traditional attire.
The village is around two and a half to three hours by road from Pokhara, making it an accessible getaway for tourists visiting the lakeside city. The number of visitors has begun to rise with the start of the Dashain festival.
“We can see the mountains clearly from here, and the village is close to Pokhara,” said Alisa Gurung, a local resident who also operates a homestay. “We are waiting to welcome tourists.”
She said homestays in the village remain open even on the day of tika, allowing visitors to travel during the Dashain holidays.
Tourists can reach Ghandruk by hiring a jeep from Pokhara or travelling in their own vehicles. According to Gurung, the weather has cleared and road conditions are currently good.
She added that local residents work together to repair roads when vehicles or road conditions cause problems.
Another local resident, Amrit Gurung, has also encouraged tourists to visit the village, saying visitors are being welcomed with the art and culture of the Gurung community.
Alongside homestays, hotels have also been established in Ghandruk to accommodate visitors.
The village also serves as a transit point for trekkers heading to destinations such as Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Annapurna and Mardi Himal.
“Ghandruk is a suitable place to stay for people travelling to and returning from trekking routes,” Alisa Gurung said.
With clear mountain views, traditional architecture, cultural experiences and access to popular trekking trails, Ghandruk is positioning itself as an attractive destination for those seeking a mountain getaway during the festive season.
