The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to commence construction of the Oron-Calabar section of the East-West Road, waiting over decade after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved N165.3 billion for the project.
The House has also called on the Federal Ministries of Works, and Finance to make provision for the project in the expected 2027 budget estimates.
The resolution was fallout of a motion by Martins Esin on Thursday, arguing that continued delay have denied Akwa Ibom and Cross River states a critical transport link expected to strengthen economic activities across the Niger Delta.
He recalled that the FEC, under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, approved the contract for the construction of the Oron-Calabar section on October 22, 2014, at a cost of ₦165.3 billion.
He added that the council approved an additional ₦661.33 million on December 3, 2014, for engineering supervision of the project.
“Despite the approvals, the Oron-Calabar section remains uncompleted, leaving a critical link in the wider East-West Road network unrealised.
The prolonged delay had undermined the objectives for which the project was approved more than 10 years ago.,” he stated.
