Barrister Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Bauchi state for the 2027 general elections, has resigned his membership of the party with immediate effect, raising questions about the opposition party’s preparations for the forthcoming governorship election.
Kashim, a former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government (SSG) under Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration, announced his decision in a resignation letter dated October 16, 2026, addressed to the chairman of the NDC in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state.
In the letter, the former SSG said his decision followed careful consideration and was based on personal reasons. Blueprint reports
“I hereby formally tender my resignation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from the date of this letter,” he stated.
The resignation comes months after Kashim emerged as the NDC’s candidate for the 2027 Bauchi governorship election, with Tata Alhaji named as his running mate. His departure leaves the party facing questions about the future of its governorship ticket and its strategy in a state where 2027 preparations are already gathering momentum.
Kashim cites personal reasons
In his resignation letter, Kashim expressed appreciation to the party’s leadership and members for the opportunity to associate with the NDC, insisting that his decision was a personal choice.
“This decision has been taken after careful consideration and is a matter of personal choice. I wish to express my appreciation to the party leadership and members for the opportunity to have been associated with the NDC,” he said.
He also requested formal acknowledgement of his resignation and an update of the party’s records to reflect his departure.
“I respectfully request that my resignation be acknowledged and that the necessary records be updated accordingly. Please accept the assurances of my highest regards,” he added.
Kashim did not disclose whether he intends to join another political party, return to a platform he previously belonged to or withdraw from the 2027 governorship contest altogether.
Neither did his letter accuse the NDC leadership of misconduct or identify any disagreement within the party as the reason for his exit.
Consequently, although his resignation has political implications for the party, the circumstances behind the decision remain unclear beyond the personal reasons stated in the letter.
From former SSG to opposition governorship candidate
Kashim served as Secretary to the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed before leaving the administration and subsequently pursuing his political ambition outside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His political journey has included a previous departure from the PDP and a subsequent move through the Social Democratic Party (SDP) before his emergence as the NDC’s governorship candidate.
In interviews ahead of the 2027 election, Kashim had presented his ambition as an opportunity to offer Bauchi voters an alternative based on purposeful leadership, competence, integrity and clearly defined policies.
In an August 2026 interview with Tribune Online, he argued that voters should look beyond party labels and focus on leadership and policy programmes.
“Political parties do not develop societies; visionary leadership and the support of the people do,” he said while explaining his decision to contest under the NDC.
His resignation therefore marks a significant development in the political journey of a candidate who had sought to build his governorship ambition around an alternative platform.
However, the reasons for his latest departure have not been established beyond the explanation contained in his resignation letter.
What Kashim’s exit means for NDC
The immediate challenge for the NDC is determining how Kashim’s resignation affects its preparations for the 2027 governorship election.
Having presented him as its candidate and named Tata Alhaji as his running mate, the party must now clarify whether the resignation will lead to a change in its electoral strategy and what steps it intends to take regarding the governorship ticket.
The development could also disrupt campaign planning, consultations with political stakeholders and efforts to build a support base around the party’s candidate.
Governorship campaigns require coordination among party leaders, candidates, grassroots structures and supporters. A departure at this stage could force the party to review those arrangements, particularly if it has already invested time and resources in promoting Kashim’s candidacy.
Nevertheless, the extent of any disruption will depend on the party’s response and whether it can quickly resolve questions surrounding its ticket.
The resignation does not, by itself, establish that the NDC has lost its electoral opportunity in Bauchi. The party’s eventual position will depend on its decisions, the applicable electoral rules and the strength of its remaining structures.
Electoral implications and the question of the ticket
Kashim’s departure also raises questions about the legal and administrative steps required to address the vacancy created by his resignation.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published a list of candidates and running mates for the 2027 Bauchi governorship election, with Kashim listed as the NDC candidate and Tata Alhaji as his running mate.
However, a candidate’s resignation from a political party and the subsequent determination of a party’s candidate for an election involve separate questions. The implications for the NDC ticket will depend on the applicable electoral provisions, the stage of the electoral process and any formal steps taken by the party and the commission.
The party would therefore need to clarify its position rather than leave supporters and prospective voters to speculate about whether a replacement will emerge or whether another course of action will be pursued.
Kashim’s next move could also influence the situation. If he joins another party, questions may arise about whether he intends to pursue the governorship ambition under a different platform. If he withdraws from the race entirely, the political consequences would be different.
For now, neither possibility has been confirmed.
A fresh development in Bauchi’s 2027 contest
The resignation comes as political parties in Bauchi intensify preparations for the contest to succeed Governor Bala Mohammed in 2027.
The governorship race features candidates from several political platforms, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Labour Party and other parties listed by INEC.
Kashim’s candidacy had positioned the NDC as another option for voters seeking an alternative to the more established political platforms in the state.
His exit could therefore affect the party’s visibility and campaign messaging, especially if it struggles to resolve the uncertainty surrounding its ticket. At the same time, the impact on the broader contest will depend on whether Kashim retains his political following and what direction he takes next.
His resignation should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a wider crisis within the NDC. Although the party has faced internal disagreements in recent weeks over leadership arrangements in the North-East, no direct link has been established between those disagreements and Kashim’s decision to leave.
The immediate issue is whether the party can manage the departure without allowing uncertainty over its governorship ticket to undermine its preparations.
Party yet to announce next line of action
As of the time of filing this report, no official announcement had been made regarding a replacement for Kashim or the NDC’s next steps in Bauchi State.
The party has also not publicly detailed how it intends to address the implications of the resignation for its governorship campaign.
Kashim, for his part, has not announced a new political affiliation or disclosed whether he will continue pursuing the governorship ambition.
His next move, alongside the NDC’s response, is likely to determine the immediate political significance of the development as Bauchi parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
