A 16-year-old teenager has shot dead three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, United States, with another child and a teacher sustaining critical injuries in the attack.
The shooting occurred on Thursday afternoon, prompting an emergency response from law enforcement officers following multiple reports of an armed attacker on the school campus. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the three children killed at the scene were aged five, eight and 11.
The suspect, who was identified as a 16-year-old resident of Bend, was later shot dead by an armed community member who reportedly saw him enter the school and pursued him into the building. Police officers subsequently entered the premises and confirmed that the teenager was dead.
Police said the first report came from a person who claimed to have been shot at several times by an individual carrying a long gun. Dozens of emergency calls followed, reporting that a shooter had entered the school, prompting authorities to mobilise law enforcement personnel in the area.
Krantz said officers arrived at the school at 1:02 pm local time, within minutes of receiving the reports. He added that preliminary findings suggested the attacker had forced his way into the building by shooting at locked doors. The police chief said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
One seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities did not immediately provide further details about their conditions, while the identity of the attacker and his possible motive remained under investigation.
Parents rush to reunite with children
The shooting triggered panic among parents and families, as the school was placed under lockdown while authorities secured the premises. The Bend-La Pine School District said law enforcement officers were escorting pupils in buses to another location where they could reunite with their families.
Parents waited anxiously as children were brought out of the school and transported to the designated meeting point. Drew Sharp, whose child attends the school, told CBS News that he had faith his child was safe, but described the wait as difficult.
The district’s superintendent, Steve Cook, tearfully described the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy”, expressing grief over the deaths and injuries. He said the community was devastated by an attack of the kind residents had hoped would never happen in their area.
The school district subsequently cancelled classes across its schools on Friday, alongside scheduled activities and sporting events, as the community began to deal with the aftermath of the shooting.
Community holds vigil for victims
Residents gathered at Drake Park in Bend on Thursday evening for a candlelight vigil to remember the victims. Flowers and candles were also placed at a makeshift memorial outside Silver Rail Elementary School as members of the community mourned the children and teacher killed in the attack.
One resident, who identified herself only as Betsy, told AFP she was shocked, frightened and saddened by the incident. She added that despite the tragedy, the gathering had brought people together in grief and solidarity.
Silver Rail Elementary School serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade and has between 400 and 450 pupils, with more than 40 staff members, according to information provided by police. Bend, where the school is located, is a city of approximately 100,000 people in north-western Oregon, about 270 kilometres south-east of Portland.
Gun violence debate renewed
The attack has renewed calls for stronger measures to address gun violence in the United States, where firearm-related deaths and mass shootings remain major public concerns.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 360 mass shootings had been recorded across the country by the time of the incident. The organisation defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot.
The gun safety organisation GIFFORDS expressed sympathy for the children and families affected, saying the country should not continue to accept such attacks as a normal part of life.
Oregon Congresswoman Janelle Bynum also condemned the killings, saying children continued to be victims of recurring gun violence. Speaking later on CNN, she questioned the lack of meaningful change despite repeated incidents.
The United States has experienced several deadly school shootings over the years, including the 2007 Virginia Tech attack, in which 32 people were killed and 17 others wounded before the gunman died by suicide. Thursday’s incident has once again intensified calls for action to prevent further attacks on schools and protect children.
