JOHANNESBURG — South Africa's National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit confiscated counterfeit merchandise valued at over R160 million during a large-scale operation in the Johannesburg central business district earlier this week.
Search-and-seizure warrants were executed on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, targeting multiple shops within a single retail building in the CBD. The operation brought together the Public Order Policing Unit from Pretoria, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Division, and brand protection representatives in a coordinated multi-agency effort.
Over 62,000 items seized
Officers recovered more than 62,000 individual counterfeit items across several product categories, including high-end branded clothing, footwear, cosmetics, watches, jewellery and sunglasses. The SA Police Service announced the seizure on its official social media platforms on 17 October 2026, noting that the operation forms part of a sustained nationwide push to dismantle the illegal trade, manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit and illicit goods.
SAPS further warned the public that counterfeit products are frequently manufactured outside regulated systems, with no quality controls or safety standards applied. Authorities noted that such goods infringe on the intellectual property rights of legitimate brand owners and pose direct health and safety risks to consumers. The police also highlighted the broader economic damage caused by illicit trade, stating that legitimate manufacturers and retailers lose market share to illegal traders, which leads to reduced production and job losses.
South Africans question outcomes
The announcement drew significant public engagement online, with users raising concerns about accountability and consistency in enforcement.
@NizzoNash questioned what becomes of confiscated merchandise, writing:
"Once the goods are seized, what happens to them? Why aren't they destroyed, or alternatively some be offered to an orphanage? Knowing the criminals within SAPS, these counterfeit goods make their way back to the owners."
@MelikhayaPants1 pointed to a perceived lack of consequences for repeat offenders, saying:
"Sane operators that were busted last time, because NO heavy sentence and jail time has been felt by the mafia team."
@Tswibila challenged authorities to broaden the scope of their crackdowns:
"We will take you seriously the day you raid China Malls."
@Shumani44318521 questioned why similar operations are not conducted daily and on a national scale, while @Marupin82983629 directed questions at border and revenue authorities, asking how illicit goods continue to enter the country.
