KUALA LUMPUR: The status and position of Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs in the opposition bloc will be determined after parliament receives clarification on the coalition's deregistration.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said a decision could not be finalised pending clarification from PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
He was responding after Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) raised the issue while Kamal Ashaari (PN-Kuala Krau) was debating in the Dewan Rakyat.
"There is no ruling on the status and position of PN MPs in the Dewan Rakyat. I have also written to the PN chairman (Ahmad Samsuri).
"God willing, once I receive clarification from the chairman, I will inform the House," he said.
Yesterday, the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (RoS) confirmed that it had cancelled PN's registration, saying the coalition's explanation failed to address the grounds for cancellation outlined in an earlier notice.
RoS said the decision was made under subparagraph 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832), after reviewing the documents and representations submitted by PN on Oct 12.
It said an earlier notice dated Sept 22 had been issued to PN under subsection 13(2) of the Act, giving the coalition 30 days to explain why its registration should not be cancelled.
Pas criticised the deregistration, which came two days before the High Court was scheduled to hear PN's legal challenge against the restrictions.
Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the timing raised questions, particularly as the hearing on PN's application for a stay of the suspension order was scheduled for Oct 22.
He claimed the move reflected the Madani government's fear of PN, particularly ahead of the Melaka election and the next general election.
