Gift cards are a popular way to send gifts, shop online and pay for digital services. Many Nigerians receive gift cards from friends and family abroad, while others get them as rewards or gifts. However, not everyone wants to use these cards to buy products or services from the stores that issued them.
For this reason, many people look for ways to convert gift cards to naira. Instead of leaving an unused gift card balance, they can check whether their card is accepted by a gift card trading platform and exchange it for money.
Gift cards from brands such as Amazon, Apple, Google Play and Steam are popular examples. However, the amount you can receive depends on the type of card, its currency, the issuing region and the current market rate.
As more Nigerians explore online trading options ahead of 2027, knowing how to check gift card rates, calculate the value of a card and avoid scams is important.
Traydah provides a platform where users can explore gift card trading options. By checking the available rates and understanding the process, Nigerians can make better decisions before exchanging their gift cards for naira.
Why Nigerians Convert Gift Cards to Naira
Gift cards are usually made for specific stores, websites or digital services. For example, an Amazon gift card is meant for eligible purchases on Amazon, while a Google Play gift card is intended for eligible purchases through Google Play.
But what happens when you receive a gift card you do not need?
You may not shop on the platform that issued it, or you may prefer to have money you can use for other expenses. In this situation, selling an eligible gift card for naira may be an option.
Gift card trading platforms allow users to submit supported cards and receive an offer based on the applicable rate and transaction requirements.
However, not all gift cards have the same value. A $100 Amazon gift card may attract a different offer from a $100 Apple or Steam gift card. The issuing country and card type can also affect the rate.
This is why it is important to check the current gift card rate before starting a trade.
How to Convert Gift Cards to Naira in Nigeria
If you want to sell a gift card in Nigeria, there are a few important steps to follow.
1. Check Your Gift Card Details
First, identify the gift card brand, currency, denomination and issuing country. Check that the card is unused and that the trading platform accepts that particular type of card.
Some cards have regional restrictions, so a card issued for one country may not have the same acceptance requirements as another.
2. Check the Current Gift Card Rate
Before selling your card, find out how much it may be worth in naira.
Gift card rates can change, so do not depend on an old rate you saw on social media or received in a message. The amount you receive depends on the specific card and the rate available when you trade it.
You can use a gift card rate calculator or check the available offers to estimate how much your card may be worth.
To check available rates and explore how to convert gift cards to naira, make sure you select the correct card type and review the applicable offer before proceeding.
3. Submit Your Gift Card
After checking the rate, follow the platform’s instructions for submitting your card.
Provide the required information carefully and make sure you understand the transaction process. Always use the official website or verified application of your chosen platform.
4. Complete the Verification Process
The platform may need to verify your card before approving the transaction. Follow the stated instructions and wait for confirmation.
Submitting a card does not automatically mean the transaction has been approved. If you have questions about a pending trade, contact the platform’s official customer support.
5. Confirm Your Naira Payment
Before completing the trade, check the expected payout and any applicable fees or conditions.
Once the transaction is approved, follow the stated payment process and confirm that the money has arrived. Keep your transaction details until the process is complete.
Following these steps can help you understand what to expect when selling gift cards online.
How to Calculate Gift Card Rates in Naira
One of the most common questions Nigerians ask is, “How much is my gift card worth in naira?”
The answer depends on the card’s brand, denomination, issuing region and current trading rate.
For example, if a trading platform offers a rate of ₦1,200 per dollar for a particular eligible gift card, a $100 card would have an estimated value of ₦120,000 at that rate.
This is only an example, not a current rate or a guaranteed payout. Actual offers may differ depending on the card and the platform’s terms.
A gift card rate calculator can help you estimate the value of your card by applying the relevant rate to its denomination. However, you should always confirm the final offer before submitting a card.
When comparing gift card rates in Nigeria, consider the following:
- Gift card brand: Amazon, Apple, Google Play and Steam cards may have different rates.
- Card denomination: The face value of the card can affect its estimated naira value.
- Issuing region: Cards from different countries may have different acceptance requirements.
- Current rate: Market conditions can affect the amount offered.
- Transaction terms: Fees, verification and other conditions may affect the final payout.
Checking these details can help you avoid unrealistic expectations and make a better decision.
What to Look for in a Gift Card Trading Platform
Choosing where to sell gift cards requires more than looking for the highest rate. You should also consider how the platform handles transactions.
Clear gift card rates: You should be able to check the applicable offer before submitting your card.
Simple transaction process: The platform should explain how to submit a card and what happens after submission.
Clear payment terms: Make sure you understand the payout process and any applicable charges.
Customer support: Choose a platform with official support channels where you can ask questions about your transaction.
Security: Avoid sharing sensitive information with unknown buyers or people claiming to represent a trading platform.
A good rate is important, but you should also understand the process and the risks before trading your card.
Common Gift Card Scams and How to Avoid Them
Online gift card trading can attract scammers who try to trick people into giving away their cards without receiving payment.
Here are some ways to protect yourself.
- Use the official website or verified application of the trading platform.
- Confirm that your gift card is accepted before submitting it.
- Check the rate and expected payout before starting a transaction.
- Avoid sending gift card details to strangers through private messages.
- Never share your banking password or one-time password (OTP).
- Keep your transaction reference and payment records.
- Contact official customer support if something does not look right.
Be careful with offers that promise unusually high rates or pressure you to act quickly. Always review the details before making a decision.
You should also remember that a gift card that has already been redeemed, is invalid or comes from an unsupported region may not qualify for a successful trade.
Gift Card Trading in Nigeria in 2027
As 2027 approaches, more people may look for convenient ways to manage digital payments and online purchases. Gift cards remain useful for shopping, gaming and digital services, but some recipients may prefer to exchange eligible cards for naira.
For anyone considering gift card trading, the most important things to understand are the available rates, the card’s eligibility and the platform’s payment process.
Do not assume that a rate will remain the same throughout the year. Gift card rates can change, and the amount offered for a card today may differ from a future offer.
