Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) president Wahengbam Anand was released on bail on Saturday after being produced before the Duty Magistrate in Imphal West, a day after his arrest by Manipur Police while attempting to stage a protest outside Congress Bhawan on BT Road.
Anand was arrested on Thursday when Youth Congress members attempted to protest against the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) demonstration targeting Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by some Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students.
Speaking to the media, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Legal Cell vice-chairman and advocate Rabi Khan accused the police of acting in a biased manner. He alleged that BJYM protesters were allowed to demonstrate in larger numbers, while Youth Congress members were arrested when they attempted to stage a protest outside their own party office.
Khan appealed to all political parties to refrain from politicising or exaggerating issues amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur. He urged them to allow the court to establish the truth and work collectively for the state’s progress despite their political differences.
