The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized 15,000kg of brown sugar worth around Tk24 lakh and a landing craft used for smuggling in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali.
Acting on a tip-off, personnel from Coast Guard Station Hatiya conducted an operation near Tanki canal at around 1pm on Monday (19 October), according to the press release.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan disclosed the details on Monday evening.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched a suspicious steel-hulled landing craft and found the sugar, which had allegedly been brought in without paying customs duties. They seized both the consignment and the vessel.
No arrests were made as the suspected smugglers fled after sensing the Coast Guard's presence, Sabbir said.
Legal proceedings concerning the seized sugar and landing craft were under way.
He added that the Coast Guard would continue such operations to curb smuggling.
