Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has called on all parties to protect its health facility in Pieri, Jonglei State, from looting and damage after insecurity and fears of renewed instability forced the organisation to discharge all patients and evacuate relocatable staff.
In a statement on Tuesday, MSF said the decision followed a recent shift in territorial control around Pieri, raising concerns about the continuation of instability in the area.
The medical organisation warned that further damage to the facility would have severe consequences for communities in and around Pieri, including patients who travel long distances from neighbouring counties to access healthcare.
MSF saidthe facility is the only healthcare provider in the area, serving vulnerable people, including pregnant women, children and older people.
The facility was previously looted and damaged in February, forcing a suspension of services. MSF resumed healthcare operations in April and has since treated hundreds of patients.
The organisation said any further damage could have long-term consequences for its ability to provide essential healthcare in the area.
