Great linemen don’t announce themselves with a flourish. They announce themselves by making everyone else in the building rearrange their plans.
Kellan Hall has spent two years doing that to offensive coordinators. This week, he did it to the recruiting rankings.
The Christian Academy of Louisville five-star, and Kentucky football target, is now the No. 1 prospect in the 2028 Rivals Industry Rankings, a weighted average that draws on all three major recruiting services. The move came Wednesday and slid Hall past Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin wide receiver Brysen Wright, who had held the top spot. Hall is also the No. 1 defensive lineman in the class and the top prospect in the state of Kentucky, a line the Wildcats keep underlining.
When Hall caught up with us earlier this month, he was the nation’s No. 2 athlete, fresh off a 15-0 state championship season in which 17.5 of his 53 tackles came behind the line of scrimmage. Now he is No. 1, and the Wildcats are working to keep Hall in the Commonwealth. Will Stein and his staff have stayed in the hunt for one of the country’s most sought-after recruits, and last weekend Hall came back to Kroger Field to watch the Wildcats outlast LSU in overtime.
He broke down the visit for us in three parts. They start with the pitch.
First, the message.
“Kentucky’s message has been ‘It’s bigger than football’ regarding my recruitment,” Hall said. “The impact on the state, the community, and the ability to attract other high profile recruits and compete for championships if I were to commit has been the focus. So for me, I’ve been blessed with so many great options. With Kentucky, it comes down to if I want to be a centerpiece that changes the history of the program.”
That is a heavy question to put to a teenager. It is also the kind that separates the players who want a jersey from the ones who want a legacy. Hall isn’t being asked to join a roster. He is being asked to change one.
Second, the composure.
“The composure of the staff and players,” Hall said. “This team has been battle-tested all year and have responded with good decisions. The confidence that Coach Stein continues to show with playcalling and going for two in crunch time has been fun to watch. LSU is a really great football team and seeing how Kentucky matched their play through the overtime was great to see in person.”
A two-point try in crunch time is more than a play call. It tells a recruit the head coach trusts his players and will answer for the call. A lineman who plays the most violent position on the field notices that.
Third, the noise.
“The fans were amazing! They showed me mad love and stood up the entire game,” Hall said. “I’ve been to games over the years, but haven’t quite seen the game atmosphere like the one this past weekend versus LSU. The scene of fans storming the field will be memorable.”
Recruits can be told about a fan base all day long. Hall got to feel the stadium shake.
None of this means Kentucky has closed the deal. Hall has released a top 12, has visited four schools, and will announce his decision Sunday, Jan. 3, on ESPN during the UA All-American Game. The Wildcats are up against programs with deeper pockets and longer résumés.
But Kentucky can make a pitch no one else can in quite the same way. Hall plays his football in Louisville. A decision to stay in the state wouldn’t just add a five-star lineman to the roster. It would signal to every other elite player in the commonwealth that this program can win at the top of the sport.
Hall is the best player in the class. Kentucky is asking him to be the centerpiece. Now comes the waiting.
The crowd is already on its feet.
