Bitcoin’s dominance in the crypto market reached 60% on October 21, its highest level since May 2026—even as its own price struggled to hold gains. The growing share of total digital-asset value pointed to a preference for BTC over altcoins, while smaller tokens suffered sharper declines and exchange-traded fund flows remained uneven.
Key takeaways
- Bitcoin’s market share hit its highest level since May 2026.
- Smaller-token indexes lost ground while most major coins held steadier.
- Giottus CEO Vikram Subburaj urged restraint amid inconsistent ETF demand.
Bitcoin’s crypto market dominance rises as its price retreats
Bitcoin’s larger share of the crypto market did not come with a sustained price rally. BTC fell below $82,000 on October 22, reversing a brief move above $84,000 the previous day.
The dominance rate measures bitcoin’s portion of the total value of digital assets. It remained near 60% after reaching that mark, reflecting investors’ preference for the largest cryptocurrency over alternatives despite muted price action.
Major altcoins hold steadier than smaller tokens
Ether (ETH), XRP and solana (SOL) posted roughly flat to positive performance over seven days, alongside bitcoin. Zcash (ZEC) stood apart as the only major coin to gain more than 10% during that period.
Smaller-token benchmarks showed deeper weakness. Among the losses, the CoinDesk Memecoin Index fell by over 5%, while the CoinDesk Computing Select Index slid 3.5% and the DeFi Select Index gave up 2.5%.
That contrast accompanied bitcoin’s rising dominance in the crypto market: the largest assets largely held their weekly ground while smaller-token indexes retreated.
Uneven ETF flows before the Fed meeting
Volatile ETF flows have yet to confirm a stronger recovery, according to Vikram Subburaj, CEO of the India-based Giottus exchange. He cautioned investors against chasing short-term bitcoin rallies while fund demand remained inconsistent.
“Flows remain volatile, and sustained inflows are needed to confirm a stronger recovery,” Subburaj said in an email. He recommended staggered purchases, measured position sizes and monitoring ETF flows and Federal Reserve signals before adding exposure.
Joel Kruger, a market strategist at LMAX Group, said crypto had shifted from outperforming equities to moving more closely with them as investors awaited another catalyst. He described global macroeconomic conditions as the dominant influence and suggested bitcoin’s scarcity could help it withstand potential turbulence in equity markets.
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet on interest-rate policy next week.
